Asian Snakehead

Channa asiatica

ExpertFreshwater

Origin: The Asian snakehead lives in waters of southern China, Taiwan, and northern Vietnam — slow rivers, ponds, ditches, and swampy areas with dense vegetation. In nature it endures cool winters down to 12 °C, setting it apart from its tropical relatives.

Also known as: Chinese snakehead, Small snakehead, Channa asiatica

Overview

The Asian snakehead is a compact but genuine predator with an elongated body and a distinctive snake-like look. It is an intelligent, territorial fish that breathes atmospheric air and can go long periods without dissolved oxygen. Keep it singly or as an established pair: even long-cohabiting fish may suddenly fight to the death, so the species is uncommon in trade. The snakehead jumps readily and pushes out from under lids, so the tank must be sealed tight. It suits experienced keepers prepared to house a predator in a species tank.

Appearance

The body is elongated, cylindrical in front, usually 20–30 cm long. Colour ranges from grey-brown to nearly black with rows of dark blotches and bluish flecks; a black eye-spot (ocellus) ringed with pale edging marks the tail base. A distinctive trait is the absent or greatly reduced pelvic fins. The head is flattened and the mouth is large with small teeth.

Care

A tank of at least 200 L with a base of at least 100×40 cm, a tight lid, and free air space above the water for air-breathing. Temperature 22–26 °C (a seasonal cool period in winter is beneficial), pH 6.0–7.5, hardness GH 5–15. Provide cover of driftwood, rocks, and plants, subdued light, good filtration, and regular water changes.

Feeding

An obligate predator. Adults take frozen and live foods — shrimp, pieces of fish and seafood meat, large insects, and earthworms. It can be trained onto sinking carnivore pellets. Do not feed live goldfish or mammalian meat, which cause disease. Feed 2–3 times a week.

Compatibility

Extremely intolerant of tankmates, especially other snakeheads. Keep singly or as an established pair in a species tank. Adding even large fish is risky, as the snakehead eventually treats them as prey or rivals. Small fish will certainly be eaten.

Breeding

It forms pairs and shows parental care. Spawning occurs at the surface and the eggs are buoyant. The male guards the clutch and fry, and in some cases mouthbroods the eggs. Breeding requires an established pair and a spacious species tank with stable conditions.

Fun facts

The species tolerates cool water and seasonal temperature swings better than tropical snakeheads. Its air-breathing lets it survive in oxygen-poor waters and move briefly over land. Many countries restrict the import and keeping of snakeheads by law — check local rules.
