Overview
Willow hygro is a large fast-growing stem plant with long narrow leaves resembling willow foliage. Thanks to its growth rate and hardiness it is an excellent background plant for large aquariums and for beginners. It grows under any light without CO2, quickly filling the space and helping against algae. The tall stems form a dense 'wall' of greenery. The leaves sometimes have a wavy edge, adding to the decorative effect.
Appearance
Tall straight stems bear opposite long narrow lanceolate-linear leaves 8–15 cm long, sometimes with a wavy edge, light or dark green. Height is 40–60 cm. The plant forms a dense vertical 'wall' in a group planting.
Care
Very undemanding: low to strong light, 22–28 °C, pH 6.0–7.8, a wide hardness range. CO2 is not required but speeds growth. It grows fast and needs regular trimming.
Fertilizing
It actively takes nutrients through roots and leaves. Macronutrients help fast growth. A good consumer of excess nitrate — it helps against algae.
Breeding
It propagates by top cuttings; the remaining stem puts out side shoots. It roots very easily.
Fun facts
The long narrow leaves make the plant resemble an underwater willow — hence the name. Its fast growth helps suppress algae in a young tank. One of the hardiest hygrophilas, suitable for beginners.
